m<strong>in</strong>us those support<strong>in</strong>g CPT Philbrick, departed later that<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g and arrived at AA Huebner that afternoon without<br />

any <strong>in</strong>cidents.<br />

<strong>The</strong> squadron ma<strong>in</strong> body consist<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> ground troops<br />

began mov<strong>in</strong>g at 0800 on April 15. <strong>The</strong> troopers, veterans of<br />

many a tactical road march, were quite efficient. <strong>The</strong>y found<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves actually ahead of <strong>the</strong> two aviation battalions that<br />

had missed <strong>the</strong>ir start times. <strong>The</strong> brigade staff accused Wilson’s<br />

command of jump<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> head of <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>to</strong> be <strong>the</strong> first out<br />

of Iraq. After several hours <strong>the</strong> truth emerged, and at <strong>the</strong> first<br />

rest s<strong>to</strong>p two hours down <strong>the</strong> road, <strong>the</strong> squadron pulled over <strong>to</strong><br />

refuel and let <strong>the</strong> avia<strong>to</strong>rs pass. By late afternoon <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

command had jo<strong>in</strong>ed back up with <strong>the</strong> division <strong>in</strong> AA Allen. 2<br />

<strong>The</strong> squadron’s officers were <strong>in</strong> a good mood as <strong>the</strong>y arrived<br />

at <strong>the</strong>ir temporary assembly area. Wilson and Burdan<br />

drove out <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> nearby <strong>1st</strong> Brigade command post <strong>to</strong> check <strong>in</strong><br />

on <strong>the</strong> division’s progress and <strong>to</strong> say hello. When speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> S3, MAJ Kev<strong>in</strong> Huddy, about <strong>the</strong> next day’s activities it became<br />

immediately apparent that <strong>the</strong> division had given both<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Brigade and <strong>the</strong> squadron <strong>the</strong> same routes and movement<br />

times. Ra<strong>the</strong>r than send it up <strong>the</strong> cha<strong>in</strong> of command for a<br />

decision, <strong>the</strong> two operations officers did some quick adjust<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> squadron’s schedule so it would clear <strong>the</strong> area prior <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Brigade’s start time. <strong>The</strong> new start was at 0515 hours and<br />

<strong>the</strong> brigade S3 said he would forward <strong>the</strong> change <strong>to</strong> division<br />

headquarters.<br />

That night <strong>the</strong> command group and Burdan’s TOC staff celebrated<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir imm<strong>in</strong>ent departure from Iraq. Specialist Adam<br />

Fuller pulled out his music box and <strong>the</strong>y sang <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> country<br />

music tapes that <strong>the</strong>y had brought from home. <strong>The</strong>y broke out<br />

all <strong>the</strong> candy, canned fruits, and sodas that <strong>the</strong>y had each been<br />

hoard<strong>in</strong>g and passed <strong>the</strong>m around. <strong>The</strong>y would need <strong>the</strong>m no<br />

more as <strong>the</strong>y were on <strong>the</strong> way home.<br />

While <strong>the</strong> ground troops were clos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong>ir assembly<br />

area, <strong>the</strong> squadron air element under CPT Philbrick supported<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>4th</strong> Brigade that had a division-directed mission of check<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> routes back <strong>to</strong> Saudi Arabia. <strong>The</strong> brigade was <strong>to</strong> locate any<br />

friendly or serviceable Iraqi equipment left beh<strong>in</strong>d along <strong>the</strong><br />
