While most of <strong>the</strong> unit has its weapons tra<strong>in</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong> far side of<br />

<strong>the</strong> defile, scouts cross <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side and look for <strong>the</strong> enemy.<br />

Once <strong>the</strong>y report it clear, <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g units bound forward one at<br />

a time. When done correctly, it takes away <strong>the</strong> enemy’s chance <strong>to</strong><br />

surprise <strong>the</strong> cross<strong>in</strong>g unit when it is most vulnerable.<br />

<strong>The</strong> weakened front-l<strong>in</strong>e divisions did not have <strong>the</strong> capability<br />

<strong>to</strong> conduct any substantial mounted patroll<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> most<br />

likely explanation is that it was directed by <strong>the</strong> Iraqi VII Corps<br />
