112 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Safwan</strong><br />

handy guide commanders could use dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fight. Due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

number of changes <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> operation order, called fragmentary<br />

orders or “FRAGOs” that <strong>the</strong> brigade issued dur<strong>in</strong>g this period,<br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> plan organized turned out <strong>to</strong> be quite a task. Capta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

Tedesco and Sauer worked all night prior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> squadron<br />

rehearsal <strong>to</strong> produce what was referred <strong>to</strong> as <strong>the</strong> operational<br />

narrative. <strong>The</strong>y, along with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r members of <strong>the</strong> TOC, also<br />

prepared fresh copies of operations overlays, issued f<strong>in</strong>al orders,<br />

reviewed recent aerial pho<strong>to</strong>graphs, and ref<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>telligence<br />

available on <strong>the</strong> Iraqi defenses. After <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al rehearsal on February<br />

23, Chapla<strong>in</strong> Parker held one last prayer meet<strong>in</strong>g and had<br />

a picture taken of <strong>the</strong> squadron’s leaders.<br />

That night <strong>the</strong> sky filled with flashes as <strong>the</strong> division completed<br />

its artillery raids on <strong>the</strong> Iraqi forces and began bombard<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> forward defenses. For <strong>the</strong> first time <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir professional<br />

lives, leaders saw artillery battalions fir<strong>in</strong>g en masse. Batteries of<br />

new MLRS rocket launchers moved among <strong>the</strong> squadron’s positions<br />

and unleashed <strong>the</strong>ir potent weapons. Of course, it was a<br />

good th<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> Iraqi counter fire was almost non-existent,<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce many of <strong>the</strong> fir<strong>in</strong>g units set up right next <strong>to</strong> squadron encampments.<br />

18<br />

Few of <strong>the</strong> squadron’s almost eight hundred soldiers slept<br />

that night. Artillery fir<strong>in</strong>g, vehicles com<strong>in</strong>g and go<strong>in</strong>g, last<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ute pack<strong>in</strong>g and check<strong>in</strong>g kept <strong>the</strong>m all awake. As before<br />

any battle, soldiers thought of home and family. <strong>The</strong>y also<br />

fought <strong>the</strong>ir own fears. We should not forget, now, after <strong>the</strong> fall<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Husse<strong>in</strong> regime, that <strong>the</strong> Iraqi Army appeared <strong>to</strong> be a serious,<br />

formidable force <strong>in</strong> <strong>1991</strong>. Many of its soldiers had been <strong>in</strong><br />

uniform for over a decade and one had <strong>to</strong> give <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> respect<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had apparently earned. For <strong>the</strong> American soldiers <strong>the</strong>n, <strong>the</strong><br />

prospect of battle was simultaneously frighten<strong>in</strong>g and exhilarat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Fortunately, LTC Wilson and his leaders had used <strong>the</strong>ir time<br />

wisely s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> notification <strong>to</strong> deploy back <strong>in</strong> November. Both<br />

ground troops were ready <strong>to</strong> go, equipped with <strong>the</strong>ir new<br />

Bradley Fight<strong>in</strong>g Vehicles and Abrams tanks. <strong>The</strong> helicopter<br />

crews were comfortable with fly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> desert and work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with <strong>the</strong> ground soldiers. It was time <strong>to</strong> put it all <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r.
