ald Kovach and SSG William Ball was just beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong><br />

truck turned out <strong>to</strong> have an eng<strong>in</strong>e problem that could not be<br />

repaired on <strong>the</strong> spot. <strong>The</strong>y got ano<strong>the</strong>r HEMTT truck, hooked<br />

up <strong>the</strong> broken one <strong>to</strong> it, and supervised its <strong>to</strong>w<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> support troops also had one of <strong>the</strong> first enemy contacts<br />

when <strong>the</strong> A Troop M88 Tank Recovery Vehicle crew, lead by<br />

SSG Ernes<strong>to</strong> Infante, saw three Iraqi soldiers climb<strong>in</strong>g out of a<br />

bunker. <strong>The</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance sergeant s<strong>to</strong>pped his vehicle and fired<br />

his .50 caliber mach<strong>in</strong>e gun at <strong>the</strong>m, caus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Iraqis <strong>to</strong> throw<br />

At 1600 hours, Fontenot’s Task Force 2-34 Armor reported<br />

A short time later, COL Maggart judged that <strong>the</strong> situation<br />

amongst <strong>the</strong> trench l<strong>in</strong>es was clear enough for <strong>the</strong> cavalry and<br />

LTC Patrick Ritter’s 1-34 AR <strong>to</strong> commence <strong>the</strong>ir attack.<br />

As B Troop emerged from <strong>the</strong> breach and began pass<strong>in</strong>g 2-<br />

120-mm sabot rounds <strong>the</strong>y had already loaded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir tubes.<br />

Each round passed through <strong>the</strong> light-sk<strong>in</strong>ned Iraqi vehicles,<br />

An M3 fired a TOW missile at ano<strong>the</strong>r light armored vehicle<br />

also attacked through an artillery position, and as <strong>the</strong>y did so<br />
