It was <strong>to</strong> no avail, however, as <strong>the</strong> Air Force destroyed <strong>the</strong>m all.<br />

Shrapnel had hit <strong>the</strong> Ziggurat <strong>in</strong> a few places, but that was<br />

about all. However, just <strong>to</strong> be on <strong>the</strong> safe side and <strong>to</strong> avoid later<br />

charges of damag<strong>in</strong>g a his<strong>to</strong>ric site, COL Mowery sent an archeologist<br />

and some military Civil Affairs specialists <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> site <strong>to</strong><br />

document <strong>the</strong> damage. 13<br />

<strong>The</strong> squadron manned three checkpo<strong>in</strong>ts. <strong>The</strong>ir purpose<br />

was <strong>to</strong> observe <strong>the</strong> military demarcation l<strong>in</strong>e, regulate <strong>the</strong><br />

movement of Iraqi civilian and military vehicles across that<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e, and provide humanitarian support for those refugees flee<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> north. 14 In addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> combat vehicles,<br />

each checkpo<strong>in</strong>t had a medical team, <strong>in</strong>telligence collection<br />

teams, and Arabic-speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terpreters. A Troop’s Check Po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

(CP) India was on a small ridge near <strong>the</strong> Ur ru<strong>in</strong>s that dom<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

Highway 8 and <strong>the</strong> roads emerg<strong>in</strong>g from An Nasiriyah.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y also manned ano<strong>the</strong>r (CP #1) that blocked a road that ran<br />

along an oil pipel<strong>in</strong>e from <strong>the</strong> west. To <strong>the</strong> east, B Troop operated<br />

Check Po<strong>in</strong>t #2, which controlled traffic mov<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong><br />

south side of <strong>the</strong> Euphrates, on Highway 8, from <strong>the</strong> east. B<br />

Troop also provided <strong>the</strong> security for <strong>the</strong> brigade water po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

which was located fifteen kilometers nor<strong>the</strong>ast of <strong>the</strong> squadron<br />

TOC. <strong>The</strong> last two checkpo<strong>in</strong>ts operated around <strong>the</strong> clock while<br />

CP India only functioned dur<strong>in</strong>g hours of daylight, partially because<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was simply <strong>to</strong>o much activity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, not far<br />

from <strong>the</strong> checkpo<strong>in</strong>t, after dark for <strong>the</strong> small command <strong>to</strong> handle.<br />

At each location, pla<strong>to</strong>ons repaired and re<strong>in</strong>forced <strong>the</strong> defensive<br />

works <strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>herited from <strong>the</strong> 2nd <strong>Cavalry</strong>. <strong>The</strong>y placed<br />

barriers across <strong>the</strong> road so that an approach<strong>in</strong>g vehicle had <strong>to</strong><br />

slow and pass an <strong>in</strong>spection po<strong>in</strong>t. A tank and a Bradley overwatched<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>spection po<strong>in</strong>t. <strong>The</strong> medics were stand<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>to</strong><br />

assist <strong>in</strong>jured refugees. Work<strong>in</strong>g out of <strong>the</strong> Aviation Brigade’s<br />

assembly area, <strong>the</strong> squadron’s aviation troops backed up and<br />

supported <strong>the</strong> reconnaissance and security effort with scoutweapons<br />

teams as required. 15<br />

Most of <strong>the</strong> refugee traffic that <strong>the</strong> Americans encountered<br />

fit <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> five general categories. <strong>The</strong> first were <strong>the</strong> local<br />

Bedou<strong>in</strong>s and people who lived out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> desert. <strong>The</strong>y drove<br />

large, multi-colored trucks loaded with <strong>the</strong>ir sheep, which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

sold <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> small <strong>to</strong>wns. O<strong>the</strong>rs simply wandered with <strong>the</strong>ir
