Task Force Iron 101<br />

was identified and its crew subjected <strong>to</strong> direct and <strong>in</strong>direct fires.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, soon after 0300 hours, <strong>the</strong> Iraqi prob<strong>in</strong>g ended. 23 <strong>The</strong><br />

squadron now settled down <strong>to</strong> its combat rout<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

<strong>The</strong> squadron’s tactical command post crew, located near<br />

<strong>the</strong> berm and centered on <strong>the</strong> two troops, moni<strong>to</strong>red and coord<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

squadron activities. Like o<strong>the</strong>r command posts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

desert, one of its most important problems was <strong>to</strong> adapt <strong>to</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a combat environment. <strong>The</strong> simple question<br />

for many was where <strong>to</strong> sleep when <strong>the</strong>y were not work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

twelve-hour shift. SGM Ken Shields lived and operated from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Diazo trailer, designed <strong>to</strong> carry <strong>the</strong> squadron’s reproduction<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> same name. When <strong>the</strong>y could, <strong>the</strong> crews set up<br />

GP (General Purpose) tents <strong>to</strong> live <strong>in</strong>. Of course, dur<strong>in</strong>g this period<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were worried about <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g artillery and <strong>the</strong> possibility<br />

of hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> displace rapidly. So, <strong>the</strong> TOC crews set up a<br />

couple of cots beside <strong>the</strong> M577 and slept on <strong>the</strong>m dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

off-cycle. <strong>The</strong>y also dug out a small trench beside it so that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

could roll over <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> event of an artillery barrage. Although<br />

it was ra<strong>the</strong>r uncomfortable, this arrangement was flexible<br />

and very convenient. Flight Operations was deployed near<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Squadron</strong> TOC with a st<strong>in</strong>ger team, as well as its slice of logistics<br />

support from both HHT and CPT Smith’s E Troop. 24<br />

Th<strong>in</strong>gs were not different with <strong>the</strong> ground troops. <strong>The</strong> armored<br />

crew members lived <strong>in</strong>, on, or alongside <strong>the</strong>ir vehicles.<br />

When possible, <strong>the</strong>y set up a cot. Usually, <strong>the</strong>re were at least<br />

two crew members awake and mann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> weapons and optical<br />

sights at all times. When it was time <strong>to</strong> replenish <strong>the</strong> vehicle<br />

with fuel, food, water, and ammunition, <strong>the</strong> crew guided it out<br />

of position and drove it a few hundred yards <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> rear. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

<strong>the</strong>y l<strong>in</strong>ked up with elements from 1LT Matt Vanderfeltz’s support<br />

pla<strong>to</strong>on and replenished <strong>the</strong>ir supplies. With all lights off,<br />

it was not uncommon for a crew occasionally <strong>to</strong> get disoriented.<br />

Fortunately, <strong>the</strong>re were no major problems dur<strong>in</strong>g this period.<br />

<strong>The</strong> squadron’s service support operated from ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> combat<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>s or <strong>the</strong> logistics support area where <strong>the</strong>y lived <strong>in</strong> tents<br />

or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir vehicles. <strong>The</strong> air troops, along with E Troop, rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Aviation Brigade’s assembly area where CPT<br />

Pete Smith coord<strong>in</strong>ated all aviation activity s<strong>in</strong>ce Flight Operations<br />

was now deployed forward. When not fly<strong>in</strong>g, air crew
