ported an unidentified movement about 500 meters forward of<br />

<strong>the</strong> screen l<strong>in</strong>e. As <strong>the</strong> troop commander s<strong>to</strong>od up <strong>in</strong> his turret<br />

for a better look, a burst of green tracer arched up <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong><br />

helicopter hover<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d him. Hayles shouted a warn<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

<strong>to</strong>ok evasive action, back<strong>in</strong>g off from <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e. Bills still could<br />

not see where <strong>the</strong> fire was com<strong>in</strong>g from, but when he heard <strong>the</strong><br />

rounds bounc<strong>in</strong>g off his vehicle, he <strong>to</strong>o dove for cover. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong><br />

fire ended as quickly as it had begun and an eerie quiet returned<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> screen l<strong>in</strong>e. <strong>The</strong> Apaches cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>to</strong> pick up<br />

movement <strong>in</strong> and around <strong>the</strong> screen l<strong>in</strong>e but <strong>the</strong> reports could<br />

not be confirmed by <strong>the</strong> OPs. 19<br />

While Wilson waited for <strong>the</strong> troops <strong>to</strong> verify <strong>the</strong>ir locations,<br />

he cross-referenced <strong>the</strong> reported enemy location on his map.<br />

Soon he determ<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong> alleged enemy unit identified by<br />

Hayles was an A Troop vehicle. He was furious and scolded <strong>the</strong><br />

troop first sergeant, who had been moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> situation, for<br />

not know<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> actual location of his unit and for not mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sure that <strong>the</strong> avia<strong>to</strong>rs knew <strong>the</strong>y were friendly. Thus avoid<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

potential fratricide <strong>in</strong>cident, <strong>the</strong> squadron commander directed<br />

<strong>the</strong> Apaches <strong>to</strong> cease-fire and move out of <strong>the</strong> area. From that<br />

moment forward, Wilson made it standard procedure <strong>to</strong> always<br />

be on <strong>the</strong> command net when Apaches were pass<strong>in</strong>g through or<br />

operat<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> squadron’s area of operations. 20<br />

Early <strong>the</strong> next morn<strong>in</strong>g, B Troop noted more movement <strong>to</strong>ward<br />

<strong>the</strong> screen l<strong>in</strong>e and its scouts fired two TOW missiles,<br />

both of which missed <strong>the</strong> targets. In addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Iraqi patrols,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>dications that <strong>the</strong> Iraqi forces were <strong>in</strong>terested<br />

<strong>in</strong> this sec<strong>to</strong>r. As LTC Hayles was return<strong>in</strong>g from his<br />

engagement around 0300 hours that morn<strong>in</strong>g (February 2), he<br />

noticed a break <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> border berm. Ano<strong>the</strong>r Apache flight after<br />

dawn confirmed <strong>the</strong> break that opened on<strong>to</strong> a primitive road<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> Saudi Arabia. In front of <strong>the</strong> gap were several “dragon’s<br />

teeth” or cement blocks designed <strong>to</strong> slow vehicle movement.<br />

Soon, patrols discovered o<strong>the</strong>r gaps and an Iraqi bulldozer hard<br />

at work tear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> berm. A squadron Cobra helicopter destroyed<br />

<strong>the</strong> offend<strong>in</strong>g bulldozer that morn<strong>in</strong>g, scatter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Iraqi soldiers work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area. <strong>Cavalry</strong> reconnaissance patrols<br />
