unexpectedly. The suddenness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g water level left <strong>the</strong>m stranded, and <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

washed away before <strong>the</strong>y could be retrieved.<br />

The Archaeology <strong>of</strong> El Marquesillo<br />

Cerro de Montezuma is a 32 m high pyramid-shaped, precolumbian ear<strong>the</strong>n<br />

mound that is a well-known landscape feature to area occupants. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Aguirre<br />

Beltrán (1992:46), follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Mexica conquest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> upper Papaloapan River Bas<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> 1457, Emperor and military leader Motecuhzoma Ilhuicam<strong>in</strong>a (Montezuma I) sent<br />

troops to <strong>the</strong> Bas<strong>in</strong>’s lowlands. One group entered <strong>the</strong> Río Michapan, <strong>the</strong> Nahua name for<br />

<strong>the</strong> San Juan River prior to <strong>the</strong> Spanish designation, and made <strong>the</strong>ir way upstream. It may<br />

well be that this <strong>in</strong>cursion <strong>of</strong> Montezuma’s troops affected <strong>the</strong> nam<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mound,<br />

which was probably more than 500 years old when <strong>the</strong> Aztec army passed by.<br />

The next <strong>of</strong>ficial mention <strong>of</strong> Cerro de Montezuma <strong>in</strong> an archaeological context<br />

did not occur until 1998. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to INAH archaeologist L<strong>in</strong>o Esp<strong>in</strong>oza García (1994,<br />

1998, 2001), <strong>the</strong> late Señora Cruz Reich Pitalua <strong>of</strong> El Marquesillo visited him 1994,<br />

while he was conduct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Proyecto Rescate Arqueológico Autopista La T<strong>in</strong>aja-<br />

Acayucan. This cultural resource management type project was <strong>in</strong>tended to identify and<br />

protect archaeological sites that could be impacted by <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> a major<br />

<strong>in</strong>terstate highway be<strong>in</strong>g built approximately 4 km from El Marquesillo. At that time,<br />

Señora Reich <strong>in</strong>formed Esp<strong>in</strong>oza that a number <strong>of</strong> precolumbian artifacts had been found<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area and were be<strong>in</strong>g sold by local residents. She also told him that she had appealed<br />

for assistance <strong>in</strong> protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> site to <strong>the</strong>n President Ernesto Zedillo, because a number<br />
