Figure 5.34. Offer<strong>in</strong>g I is at <strong>the</strong> center, and Offer<strong>in</strong>g II is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> semi-circular excavation<br />

at <strong>the</strong> upper left-center. The Olmec throne is to <strong>the</strong> left <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> position <strong>in</strong> which it was<br />

uncovered (photo by Hernández, 2002).<br />

The ceramic component <strong>in</strong>cluded pieces that represent <strong>the</strong> Early Formative (75<br />

pieces), Middle Formative and transitional to Late Formative (666), and Late Formative<br />

periods (974) (see Appendix 2). O<strong>the</strong>r pieces that totaled 1,633 were not chronologically<br />

diagnostic and were composed primarily <strong>of</strong> domestic wares. All wares were recovered<br />

consistently throughout all levels <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g. Dur<strong>in</strong>g analysis it was found that <strong>the</strong><br />

ceramic potsherds were pieces <strong>of</strong> complete vessels. There were miss<strong>in</strong>g pieces whose<br />

absence was attributed to <strong>the</strong> digg<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> soil around <strong>the</strong> throne by <strong>the</strong> local residents<br />

and <strong>the</strong> deposition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g material down <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> embankment (Figure<br />

4.13).<br />
