A preliminary topographic map of the area was made while the excavations were in progress (see Hernández and Barrera 2002: Levantamiento Planimétrico) (Figure 3.10). A pedestrian reconnaissance of the mapped area, including the exposed river cut, was conducted; a series of architectural complexes (conjuntos) were recorded; and aspects of the site and project were documented with photographs. The largest set of buildings at El Marquesillo is the Cerro de Moctezuma Complex, a major Villa Alta-type construction that covers 71.43 ha. This Late Classic to Postclassic compound is oriented on a north-south axis with most associated construction lying to the south and southwest of the main plaza. Ballcourts, plazas, pozos, and a variety of architectural designs of structures and superstructures, all in keeping with the Villa Alta tradition, are present (Killion and Urcid 2001). 103
