The Olmec Throne Architectural Complex<br />

This architectural complex is composed <strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> ear<strong>the</strong>n structures that are<br />

spatially associated with <strong>the</strong> depositional location <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> monumental Olmec Throne<br />

(Figures 4.12 and 4.13). The primary structure is a long platform that extends<br />

approximately 300 m from <strong>the</strong> edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river cut bank to <strong>the</strong> west-northwest. Figure<br />

4.12 is a Digital Terra<strong>in</strong> Model <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Throne Complex that demonstrates <strong>the</strong> immensity<br />

and form <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foundational platform structure. Almost certa<strong>in</strong>ly, <strong>the</strong> eastern portions <strong>of</strong><br />

this structure have been lost to <strong>the</strong> river. This foundational platform is 170 m wide and<br />

supports six circular ear<strong>the</strong>n mounds, <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ctive U-shaped Structure 77, and Plazas I<br />

and II. In pr<strong>of</strong>ile from <strong>the</strong> north, <strong>the</strong> Throne Complex Platform creates a wedge-shape<br />

with <strong>the</strong> upper surface level and <strong>the</strong> base slop<strong>in</strong>g downward follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> natural<br />

contours <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> land as it extends away from <strong>the</strong> river cut. Thus, <strong>the</strong> eastern end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

platform, nearest <strong>the</strong> river cut, is raised above <strong>the</strong> natural ground level only 0.5-1 m.<br />
