Archaeological evidence to suggest significant contact by precolumbian imperialists (e.g.,<br />

Teotihuacanos, Toltecs, or Aztecs) is lack<strong>in</strong>g. It also appears that early Spanish<br />

colonizers along with contemporary researchers also overlooked this region.<br />

Prelim<strong>in</strong>ary evidence suggests 3,500 years <strong>of</strong> occupation began <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Early<br />

Formative period (c. 1500 BC) and extends to <strong>the</strong> present day. To understand this<br />

extended period <strong>of</strong> cultural cont<strong>in</strong>uity, it is beneficial to compile as comprehensive an<br />

assemblage <strong>of</strong> data regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> site as possible. To accomplish this objective, this<br />

chapter exam<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> ethnohistoric, archaeological, and geophysical record <strong>of</strong> El<br />

Marquesillo. The <strong>in</strong>itial section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chapter describes <strong>the</strong> physiography <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

surround<strong>in</strong>g landscape and <strong>the</strong> dynamic natural processes that cont<strong>in</strong>ue to impact <strong>the</strong> site.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g section is a chronological assessment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site’s occupation based on<br />

regional ceramic cross-ties to well-documented collections that beg<strong>in</strong>s with <strong>the</strong> Early<br />

Formative period (c. 1500-900 BC) and cont<strong>in</strong>ues through <strong>the</strong> Classic periods (c. AD<br />
