<strong>the</strong> earliest detectable occupation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Early Formative pre-Olmec period (c.<br />

1500-1150 BC), it became apparent that a number <strong>of</strong> sites conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> equivalent <strong>of</strong><br />

Ojochi, Chicharras, and Bajío phase ceramic material. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to regional surveys,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se settlements went on to become centers dur<strong>in</strong>g what is termed <strong>the</strong> San Lorenzo<br />

Olmec phase (Borste<strong>in</strong> 2001; Killion and Urcid 2001; Symonds 2000). These data<br />

suggest a significant l<strong>in</strong>k between specific sites and <strong>the</strong> later development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Olmec<br />

phenomenon. Fur<strong>the</strong>r documentation <strong>of</strong> sites that conta<strong>in</strong> pre-Olmec and Olmec ceramics<br />

needs to be assembled. Record<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir spatial positions is an efficient and effective<br />

method that would <strong>in</strong>volve enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se data <strong>in</strong>to a GIS where it could be layered and<br />

queried across <strong>the</strong> Olmec <strong>Heartland</strong> and beyond as needed. The desirability <strong>of</strong> this type<br />

<strong>of</strong> platform is <strong>the</strong> ability to <strong>in</strong>clude a complete diachronic placement <strong>of</strong> sites accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

type, size, chronology, ceramics, and any o<strong>the</strong>r trait or characteristics deemed significant.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, this database would be expandable to <strong>in</strong>clude any new data recovered and<br />

could beg<strong>in</strong> with <strong>the</strong> earliest occupations along <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Gulf</strong> Lowlands, to Spanish<br />

Contact, and even to contemporary habitation. F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> database could be made<br />

available to any and all researchers via <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternet, <strong>the</strong>reby expand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation<br />

and promot<strong>in</strong>g focused collaborative efforts.<br />

Conclud<strong>in</strong>g Remarks<br />

Although a rewrit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Olmec political history may not yet be necessary, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>of</strong> El Marquesillo has shown that <strong>the</strong> unexpected appearance <strong>of</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle site<br />

can have archaeological repercussions throughout <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Gulf</strong> Lowlands. The<br />

formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical Olmec paradigm commenced at <strong>the</strong> Hacienda de Hueyapan <strong>in</strong><br />
