Locational, political economic models must be employed with care, and <strong>the</strong><br />

researcher should be cognizant <strong>of</strong> numerous variables when evaluations are made.<br />

Crumley and Marquardt (1990:73-74) po<strong>in</strong>t out that human societies “conceived” and<br />

“negotiated” reality at specific temporal and spatial levels. They recommend that <strong>the</strong><br />

researcher select an “effective scale” to be employed at <strong>the</strong> “moment <strong>of</strong> analysis” that<br />

will produce <strong>the</strong> best comprehension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> detected patterns (Crumley 1994:9;<br />

Marquardt and Crumley 1987:7). F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> dynamic cultural, environmental, and<br />

geophysical landscapes must be thoroughly considered.<br />

San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w Stirl<strong>in</strong>g (1955) first reported on <strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán,<br />

where he uncovered 20 monumental stone sculptures <strong>in</strong> 1945 and 1946 (Figure 2.1). San<br />
