The Late Classic Period (c. AD 550-900)<br />

A series <strong>of</strong> F<strong>in</strong>e Orange wares are assigned to <strong>the</strong> Late Classic or Villa Alta<br />

phase. These types <strong>in</strong>clude an undecorated or pla<strong>in</strong> variant (41.1 and 4101), one with a<br />

dark core (41.2), F<strong>in</strong>e Orange with an orange slip (4104), and ano<strong>the</strong>r with a white slip<br />

(4105). The vessel forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se later types vary significantly from any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earlier<br />

types, and <strong>the</strong>re is substantial advancement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> production and fir<strong>in</strong>g technologies as<br />

well. Offer<strong>in</strong>gs III, IV, and V described <strong>in</strong> this chapter provide examples and fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>the</strong> ceramics <strong>of</strong> this period.<br />

Postclassic Period (c. AD 900- 1500)<br />

At this po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation, no ceramic wares have been l<strong>in</strong>ked def<strong>in</strong>itively<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Postclassic period at El Marquesillo. Cont<strong>in</strong>ued work by Hernández <strong>in</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Veracruz suggests that little change occurred <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> El Marquesillo region and <strong>in</strong> areas<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> San Juan Bas<strong>in</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g periods subsequent to <strong>the</strong> Villa Alta occupations<br />

(Lourdes Hernández personal communication, 2006). Recent work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region has<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicated that ceramic wares and associated technologies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Late Classic period<br />

extended well <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Postclassic, possibly up to <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> European contact<br />

(Arellanos-Melgarejo and Beuregard-García 2001; Esquivias 2002; Pool 2006; Santley<br />

and Arnold 1996).<br />

Colonial and European Ceramics (c. AD 1500-1940)<br />

A variety <strong>of</strong> post-contact period ceramics are present at El Marquesillo.<br />

Identification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se ceramics was made with <strong>the</strong> assistance <strong>of</strong> Judith Hernández<br />
