A primary objective <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soil analysis was to illustrate <strong>the</strong> chemical signatures<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> soils and to see how those markers may <strong>in</strong>dicate spatially discrete activities, such<br />

as food preparation, cook<strong>in</strong>g, or ceremonial events. Krig<strong>in</strong>g, a method <strong>of</strong> geostatisitcal<br />

analysis, was used to spatially <strong>in</strong>terpolate and illustrate <strong>the</strong> differences across <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

area under analysis. This technique provides statistical methods that <strong>in</strong>terpolate unknown<br />

values based on <strong>the</strong> known values <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> plot. Autocorrelation determ<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> quantitative<br />

relationships among known, measured po<strong>in</strong>ts, which is effective <strong>in</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

prediction surface. Variation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> surface is expla<strong>in</strong>ed through a ma<strong>the</strong>matically<br />

produced spatial correlation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> distance between sample po<strong>in</strong>ts. Krig<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>volves a<br />

two-step process that first generates variograms and covariance functions that statistically<br />

approximate <strong>the</strong> spatial correlation values, and second, uses <strong>the</strong> known values to predict<br />

<strong>the</strong> unknown ones. All po<strong>in</strong>ts and distances are considered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
