<strong>the</strong> faction <strong>the</strong>y represent can also be <strong>in</strong>ferred from <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> wealth, power, and<br />

organization required to acquire and construct a 12-ton monolithic throne.<br />

The depositional location and placement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> throne, as well as those <strong>of</strong><br />

associated Offer<strong>in</strong>gs I and II, are noteworthy because <strong>the</strong>y appear to be related to a ritual<br />

term<strong>in</strong>ation event. By exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> method and placement <strong>of</strong> deposition it may be<br />

possible to reconstruct <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> throne. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, it is possible that<br />

Classic period activities occurred a millennium after <strong>the</strong> deposition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> throne were<br />

affected by <strong>the</strong> method <strong>of</strong> its <strong>in</strong>terment.<br />

Figure 6.2 illustrates <strong>the</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>sized method by which <strong>the</strong> throne was <strong>in</strong>terred<br />

based on observations by Hernández dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 2002 rescue project. By digg<strong>in</strong>g a hole <strong>in</strong><br />

front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> monument, it was <strong>the</strong>n possible to turn and lower <strong>the</strong> sculpture <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> hole<br />

by remov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> earth support<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> piece. This manner <strong>of</strong> burial would<br />

provide control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> movement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> object and allow it to be positioned ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />
