The San Lorenzo Olmec Period (c. 1150-900 BC)<br />

Two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> traditional types representative <strong>of</strong> this period, are Limón Incised<br />

(1201) (Figure 5.16) and Calzadas Carved (1202) (Figure 5.17). Figure 5.18 illustrates a<br />

variant <strong>of</strong> San Lorenzo’s Limón Incised pottery (1201) (Coe and Diehl 1980a:171-174).<br />

This flat bottomed vessel was found <strong>in</strong> situ among o<strong>the</strong>r Early Formative period pieces <strong>in</strong><br />

Field 6, and it is representative <strong>of</strong> numerous o<strong>the</strong>r sherds conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same type <strong>of</strong><br />

decorative pattern, <strong>in</strong>cision, paste, and color.<br />
