Lowlands, concerted agricultural production may not have been required or desired (see<br />

Blake 2006; Coe 1981; Coe and Diehl 1980a). These data suggest that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>of</strong><br />

San Lorenzo (c. 1300-900 BC) and later La Venta (c. 900-400 BC) may not have been<br />

fully agricultural societies. Thus, it is possible that <strong>the</strong> significance <strong>of</strong> maize among<br />
