1971:90; Taube 2004:91). San Lorenzo Monument 52 is a depiction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Olmec ra<strong>in</strong><br />

deity wear<strong>in</strong>g identical adornments (Diehl 2004:40). The relationship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Monument<br />

52 to water elements is re<strong>in</strong>forced by <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> this figure is carved <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

typical trough-shape and size <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> basalt dra<strong>in</strong>s used atop <strong>the</strong> San Lorenzo plateau (Coe<br />

and Diehl 1980a; Cyphers 1993) (Figure 6.3. At El Marquesillo, <strong>the</strong> sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head<br />

cover<strong>in</strong>g are fa<strong>in</strong>t rema<strong>in</strong>ders <strong>of</strong> iconographic elements. It is possible that remnants <strong>of</strong> a<br />

red, pa<strong>in</strong>t-like substance are also present.<br />
