Through <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> a sequence <strong>of</strong> archaeological and geophysical surveys,<br />

ethnographic accounts, ethnohistoric records, and consideration <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r regional<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigations, <strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> El Marquesillo has been exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> an attempt to assess its<br />

Formative period social and spatial establishment and development. The evaluation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

results aga<strong>in</strong>st settlement system models provided explanatory <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> cultural<br />

and physical determ<strong>in</strong>ants for El Marquesillo’s presence on <strong>the</strong> landscape. The data<br />

derived from El Marquesillo were also evaluated aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>oretical concepts <strong>of</strong> social<br />

organization and <strong>in</strong>teraction <strong>in</strong> an effort to def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> occupants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

evolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir relationship with or variance from what are considered<br />

<strong>the</strong> sociopolitical and ideological fundamentals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Olmec paradigm.<br />

In this chapter I provide an overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> occupational sequence <strong>of</strong> El<br />

Marquesillo and <strong>the</strong>n discuss its establishment and cont<strong>in</strong>ued development <strong>in</strong> more detail<br />

based on <strong>the</strong> recovered artifact record and data from <strong>the</strong> prospection and documentation<br />

techniques employed dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> project. I also <strong>in</strong>clude ethnohistoric accounts and<br />

comparative reports from o<strong>the</strong>r regional <strong>in</strong>vestigations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> discussion. From <strong>the</strong>se<br />

datasets I detect and exam<strong>in</strong>e patterns <strong>of</strong> emergent sociopolitical complexity at <strong>the</strong> site,<br />

and evaluate <strong>the</strong>oretical models <strong>of</strong> Formative period Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Gulf</strong> Lowlands spatial<br />

organization. Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se assessments, I discuss some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> constra<strong>in</strong>ts imposed by<br />

past analytical approaches to <strong>the</strong> Formative period Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Gulf</strong> Coast region that have<br />

biased our views and knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region. F<strong>in</strong>ally, follow<strong>in</strong>g a summation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

deductions and <strong>the</strong>ir implications, I present considerations for future <strong>in</strong>vestigative work at<br />

El Marquesillo.<br />
