unknown archaeologically.” Diehl (2004:7) prefaced his recent publication on <strong>the</strong> Olmec<br />

by stat<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y “are one <strong>of</strong> antiquities most mysterious, fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g, poorly<br />

understood, and controversial civilizations.” One’s <strong>in</strong>itial thought may be that this l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

was simply hyperbole <strong>in</strong>tended to entice <strong>the</strong> audience through an aura <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exotic<br />

unknown. In truth, however, even <strong>the</strong> most ardent Mesoamerican Formative period<br />

scholar would have difficulty argu<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st ei<strong>the</strong>r Clark’s or Diehl’s assertions.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial archaeological <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Gulf</strong> Lowlands <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mid-1800s, uncerta<strong>in</strong>ties, misjudgments, and controversies have h<strong>in</strong>dered study and<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpretation and cont<strong>in</strong>ue to impede substantive progress with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>e. This<br />

situation is due to a variety <strong>of</strong> factors. First, archaeological <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> ancient<br />

<strong>Gulf</strong> Olmec has produced limited data relat<strong>in</strong>g to emergent complexity and o<strong>the</strong>r social<br />

issues. Historically, comprehensive <strong>in</strong>vestigations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Formative Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Gulf</strong><br />

Lowlands have been nom<strong>in</strong>al, and <strong>the</strong> dearth <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation has been consistently noted<br />

(Coe 1989:68-70; Diehl 1989, 1998, 2000b; Grove 1997:72-73; Sharer 1989:3-4;<br />

Soustelle 1984:7; Stark and Arnold 1997). Second, <strong>the</strong> preponderance <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation that<br />

has been produced has emanated only from <strong>the</strong> sites <strong>of</strong> San Lorenzo <strong>in</strong> Veracruz and La<br />

Venta <strong>in</strong> Tabasco, Mexico; seldom has <strong>the</strong> full scope <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region been considered. The<br />

foundations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> social <strong>the</strong>ories have been built almost exclusively on <strong>the</strong>se two sites.<br />

Third, and possibly <strong>the</strong> most detrimental to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigative progress, is that<br />

many earlier explanations for sociopolitical development were based on conjecture,<br />

<strong>in</strong>ference, and supposition. Ow<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> primary data, many <strong>in</strong>vestigations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Gulf</strong> Lowlands have arrived at conclusions through implication or <strong>in</strong>direct<br />

methods <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpretation such as carry<strong>in</strong>g capacities, technological modification, and<br />
