Relative to o<strong>the</strong>r lithic tools, <strong>the</strong> proposed polish<strong>in</strong>g implements appear with<br />

exceptional frequency and <strong>in</strong> various forms. These pieces were recovered across <strong>the</strong> site<br />

<strong>in</strong> all chronological contexts (Figure 5.50). Some were fashioned from igneous rock,<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs from nuggets <strong>of</strong> river gravel, still o<strong>the</strong>rs from unidentified f<strong>in</strong>e-gra<strong>in</strong>ed stones.<br />

Macroscopic exam<strong>in</strong>ation revealed <strong>the</strong>se pieces to have highly smoo<strong>the</strong>d edges and<br />

striated wear patterns consistent with <strong>the</strong> smooth<strong>in</strong>g and burnish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> ceramics as well<br />

as o<strong>the</strong>r stone items (S<strong>in</strong>opoli 1991:24-26; Sullivan 1988).<br />

Polish<strong>in</strong>g stones recovered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Gulf</strong> Lowlands have been identified as<br />

tools used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> stone and ceramic artifacts. F<strong>in</strong>e polish<strong>in</strong>g was required to<br />

produce celts, masks, discs, and figur<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> jade, serpent<strong>in</strong>e, and o<strong>the</strong>r greenstones<br />

(Benson 1981b; Ortíz and Rodríguez 2000; Pohl et al. 2002). The brilliantly polished<br />

concave mirrors fabricated from iron oxide ores (hematite, ilmenite, and magnetite),<br />

pyrite, marcasite, and obsidian are examples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> advanced technological skills <strong>of</strong><br />

Formative period lapidaries (Carlson 1981; Heizer and Gullberg 1981). Polish<strong>in</strong>g stones<br />
