loader had managed to scrape only a few centimeters from <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast portion and<br />

refused to cont<strong>in</strong>ue due to fears <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>durated l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g would damage his mach<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Due to <strong>the</strong> heavy undergrowth and thicket <strong>of</strong> trees along a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> west<br />

segment <strong>of</strong> Structure 77’s north wall near <strong>the</strong> poza (77a), nei<strong>the</strong>r total station nor GPS<br />

data could be collected without disturb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> area. This unmapped area was <strong>the</strong> only one<br />

encountered dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> survey. Due to <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> spatial data, <strong>the</strong> pozo appears to be<br />

connected to Depression A (Figure 4.17). In actuality, <strong>the</strong>re is a ten meter wide mound<br />

separat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> two and <strong>the</strong> poza is completely conta<strong>in</strong>ed with<strong>in</strong> Structure 77, as <strong>the</strong> photo<br />

<strong>in</strong> Figure 4.18 illustrates.<br />

A second natural water feature lies adjacent to <strong>the</strong> west end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Throne<br />

Complex’s basal platform. The westward extension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Throne Group medial axis l<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

illustrated <strong>in</strong> Figure 4.16, passes neatly over <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong> this natural seep spr<strong>in</strong>g (Figure<br />

4.19). The exuberant growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vegetation attests to <strong>the</strong> abundance and persistence <strong>of</strong><br />

surface and near-surface water.<br />

Figure 4.18. View look<strong>in</strong>g north across <strong>the</strong> poza. Trees and undergrowth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> upper left<br />

conceal portions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> north side <strong>of</strong> Structure 77 prevented data collection <strong>in</strong> that area.<br />
