Surface Mapp<strong>in</strong>g and Terra<strong>in</strong> Model<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The overall objectives for GPS and total station mapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> topography and<br />

terra<strong>in</strong> model<strong>in</strong>g at El Marquesillo were to: 1) provide horizontal and vertical control for<br />

<strong>the</strong> site; 2) locate and bound surface features; and 3) collect data with attribute<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation for merg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a Geographic Information System (GIS). In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong><br />

collected accurate spatial data could be visualized <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> formats. One method is<br />

terra<strong>in</strong> model<strong>in</strong>g, or <strong>the</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> ground-surface relief and pattern through numerical<br />

techniques (Moore et al. 1991; Price 1998). GIS technology enables terra<strong>in</strong>-model<strong>in</strong>g<br />

results to be comb<strong>in</strong>ed with o<strong>the</strong>r spatial and attribute datasets, such as tabular and<br />

descriptive <strong>in</strong>formation, which can be l<strong>in</strong>ked <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> GIS to real-world locational data<br />

(Pike 1995). Us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> plot by <strong>the</strong> ‘X, Y’ coord<strong>in</strong>ate feature <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ESRI ArcMap 8.0 and<br />

higher s<strong>of</strong>tware, survey data from <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Gulf</strong> Lowlands can be collected,<br />

processed, and presented <strong>in</strong> one <strong>in</strong>tegrated format for all surveys. Site locations can be<br />

shown us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> reported UTM or Latitude/Longitude coord<strong>in</strong>ates that have been<br />

processed and brought <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> same coord<strong>in</strong>ate system. The comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> spatial data<br />

collected from multiple surveys can assist with understand<strong>in</strong>g settlement pattern<br />

development and changes across <strong>the</strong> landscape. Note that on several maps <strong>the</strong> specific<br />

locational coord<strong>in</strong>ates are not shown. This <strong>in</strong>formation has been <strong>in</strong>tentionally omitted due<br />

to <strong>the</strong> sensitivity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site and <strong>the</strong> potential for misuse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se data. Readers who desire<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>formation regard<strong>in</strong>g this matter may contact <strong>the</strong> author through <strong>the</strong> Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>An</strong>thropology at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> South Florida.<br />

The goals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site-specific mapp<strong>in</strong>g portion <strong>of</strong> El Marquesillo’s project were to:<br />

(1) understand <strong>the</strong> prehistoric site layout with respect to <strong>the</strong> landscape; (2) <strong>in</strong>tegrate <strong>the</strong><br />
