The precision and accuracy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mapp<strong>in</strong>g procedures and <strong>the</strong> magnetometer<br />

survey can <strong>in</strong>dicate specific areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest and identify <strong>the</strong>ir location to with<strong>in</strong> a meter.<br />

This accuracy permits limited, highly focused excavations that can be designed to address<br />

specific questions. The anthropogenic soil survey can be expanded to targeted areas <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> site that will generate greater <strong>in</strong>formation on human activities. The magnetometer<br />

survey area should be enlarged to <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> Villa Alta long-mound complexes, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r locations likely to conta<strong>in</strong> any Formative period stone sculptures that may have<br />

been found and relocated by Classic period <strong>in</strong>habitants. A closer exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ceramic assemblage, along with o<strong>the</strong>r artifacts, can add substantial <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> spatial<br />

organization and political economy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r issues for future work to address <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> extension <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigative<br />

boundaries. The marg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study area need to be expanded to <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> adjacent<br />

Classic Villa Alta complexes, which will provide substantially more <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cultural cont<strong>in</strong>uity at <strong>the</strong> site. As well, regional surveys are needed on both<br />

sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> San Juan River; one to fill <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> critical areas not covered by earlier surveys<br />

on <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river, and ano<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> southwest side to br<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

unexplored region <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> archaeological forum. The regional surveys will allow El<br />

Marquesillo and its environs to be assessed on a broader scale and possibly reveal<br />

<strong>in</strong>teractions with o<strong>the</strong>r regional centers.<br />

The critiqu<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gulf</strong> Coast Olmec paradigm is significant to scholarly<br />

research. Never<strong>the</strong>less, to more fully understand what or who <strong>the</strong> Olmec were, we need<br />

to know more about <strong>the</strong>ir genesis, <strong>the</strong>ir orig<strong>in</strong>. It is possible that present and future data<br />

from El Marquesillo may be able to contribute to this pursuit. Dur<strong>in</strong>g my research <strong>in</strong>to<br />
