6.3). At La Venta equivalent basalt troughs and dra<strong>in</strong>age systems are present (Heizer,<br />

Drucker et al. 1968). In Group E at San Lorenzo, Laguna 8 is a stand<strong>in</strong>g water feature<br />

similar to that at El Marquesillo. The laguna has been l<strong>in</strong>ked to <strong>the</strong> dra<strong>in</strong> system, and <strong>the</strong><br />

entire area has been identified as, “a clear hotspot <strong>of</strong> elite activity” (Cyphers 1993:159-<br />

161; Diehl 2004:39).<br />

Stirl<strong>in</strong>g (1955:15) reports that San Lorenzo Monument 14, a table top throne,<br />

correspond<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> shape, form, and with similar symbolic content to <strong>the</strong> throne at El<br />

Marquesillo, was found submerged with<strong>in</strong> Laguna 8 and was visible only dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> dry<br />

season when <strong>the</strong> water level dropped. Fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vestigations showed that Monument 14<br />
