In each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> five pr<strong>of</strong>iles illustrated <strong>in</strong> Figures 5.8 through 5.12, <strong>the</strong> lettered red<br />

asterisks identify locations where soil specimens were taken for future analysis. The<br />

numbered blue icons <strong>in</strong>dicate places where ceramic specimens were extracted. The<br />

pottery pieces were selected <strong>in</strong> an attempt to recover diagnostic types to assist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

chronological and spatial <strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ile. The frequency (light versus heavy)<br />

and location <strong>of</strong> ceramic artifact concentrations are denoted by o<strong>the</strong>r symbols. In <strong>the</strong><br />

descriptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ile ceramics, four chronological phases are referred to: Early<br />

Formative (c. 1500-900 BC), Middle Formative (c. 900-400 BC), Late Formative (c. 400-<br />

100 BC), and <strong>the</strong> Protoclassic period (100 BC-AD 200). The master list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceramic<br />

types, classifications, and descriptions is conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Appendix 1a and 1b.<br />
