5.0 Roles and responsibilities<br />

5.1 Chief Executive<br />

It is the responsibility of the Chief Executive and the <strong>Trust</strong> <strong>Board</strong> to ensure<br />

adequate arrangements are made to control hospital infection. These<br />

arrangements include the implementation of an Infection Control Operational<br />

Committee (ICOC) and the appointment of a Director of Infection, Prevention and<br />

Control (DIPC) with adequate Infection Control Nurse (ICN) cover.<br />

5.2 Executive Lead for Infection Control<br />

The Chief Nurse will have delegated responsibility for leading infection control<br />

arrangements within the <strong>Trust</strong>. This will include liaising with the Director of<br />

Infection Prevention and Control, Head of Infection Control Nursing Services and<br />

relevant managers as appropriate and overseeing the delivery and monitoring of<br />

the Assurance Framework for infection control<br />

5.3 <strong>Trust</strong> <strong>Board</strong><br />

It is the responsibility of the <strong>Trust</strong> <strong>Board</strong><br />

a) To ensure the implementation of infection control policies and guidelines<br />

b) To receive regular reports from the Director of Infection Prevention and<br />

Control<br />

c) To ensure adequate resources for the prevention and control of health care<br />

associated infection are in place<br />

d) To ensure that infection control is embedded into performance management<br />

e) To ensure that processes are in place to assess risks from infection and to<br />

take appropriate measures to manage these risks<br />

f) To monitor and receive regular reports on key infection rates and<br />

comparative information over time and between organisations<br />

g) To take account of infection control issues when making policy and<br />

investment decisions<br />

5.4 Medical Director<br />

It is the responsibility of the Medical Director to ensure all infection control policies and<br />

guidelines are communicated to all Medical staff (to include Medical Students) and ensure<br />

infection control principles are incorporated as part of day-to-day clinical practices.<br />

5.5 Infection Control Service (ICS)<br />

The Infection Control Service is responsible for the day-to-day management of the<br />

prevention of cross infection and the provision of advice on the implementation of infection<br />

control measures required.<br />
