undertake regular updates thereafter.<br />

6.5.5 Consideration will be given to quarterly courses on GCP to be held on <strong>Trust</strong> premises.<br />

6.6 New build clinical research and education facility<br />

6.6.1 The <strong>Trust</strong> will continue to support an integrated clinical research and education facility<br />

on the new hospital site.<br />

6.6.2 The <strong>Trust</strong> will continue to work with the University of <strong>Birmingham</strong> and other local higher<br />

education institutions to develop new clinical academic posts based in the existing and<br />

the new hospitals.<br />

6.7 External contacts<br />

6.7.1 The <strong>Trust</strong> will support the new <strong>Birmingham</strong> CLAHRC and the potential HIEC and will<br />

develop further links with external bodies as required to further its research portfolio.<br />

6.8 Promotion of research<br />

6.8.1 Once the new R&D Department staffing arrangements have been instituted, promotion<br />

of research will re-commence through regular newsletters to staff and the R&D website.<br />

6.8.2 The <strong>Trust</strong> will hold a half-day celebration of its research history and current work in early<br />

<strong>2010</strong>. This will include talks by senior clinical researchers at the <strong>Trust</strong>, along with the<br />

annual junior research prize competition (Evans and Gaisford Award).<br />

6.8.3 Throughout <strong>2010</strong>, the <strong>Trust</strong> will have a policy of actively promoting its research strategy<br />

to staff and encouraging them to develop research interests.<br />

6.9 <strong>Trust</strong> annual grant round<br />

6.9.1 The <strong>Trust</strong> will re-institute its annual grant round in <strong>2010</strong> with funding from charitable<br />

sources.<br />

6.9.2 The number and size of the grants will be reviewed and the methods by which this<br />

competitive process will be managed will also be reviewed.<br />

7. STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES FOR RESEARCH AND<br />

DEVELOPMENT FOR 2009 – 2011<br />

7.1 Development and adoption by SWBH <strong>Trust</strong> of a research and development strategy.<br />

Progress will be monitored monthly by the two responsible executive directors and by<br />

quarterly presentations to the <strong>Trust</strong> <strong>Board</strong>.<br />

7.2 Staffing in the R&D Department will be restored and expanded to support clinical<br />

research.<br />

7.3 Transparent financial systems for research will be introduced to the <strong>Trust</strong>. This will<br />

require additional support by the Finance Department.<br />

7.4 Junior and senior clinicians will be supported in terms of time for research and preparing<br />

grant applications, along with providing logistical support for research.<br />

7.5 A network of well trained research support staff will be developed which will include<br />

tenured research nurses, research scientists and administrative staff.<br />
