SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS:<br />

In September 2009 the <strong>Trust</strong> and PCT <strong>Board</strong>s agreed to public consultation on the three shortlisted<br />

options for changes to the way maternity services in relation to intra-partum and<br />

Consultant led care, are provided at <strong>Sandwell</strong> and <strong>West</strong> <strong>Birmingham</strong> <strong>Hospitals</strong> NHS <strong>Trust</strong> in the<br />

medium term i.e. from <strong>2010</strong> until the opening of the new Acute Hospital in 2015/16. Following<br />

this public consultation took place between 12 th October 2009 and 18 th January <strong>2010</strong>. The<br />

outcome of this consultation has been reviewed by an independent organisation, Merida<br />

Associates and this paper is their report on the public consultation.<br />

As part of the public consultation 780 questionnaires were completed and from these the<br />

assessment of options was:<br />

• Option 1 Was the preferred option for 201 (26%) people<br />

• Option 2 Was the preferred option for 185 (24%) people<br />

• Option 3 Was the preferred option for 327 (42%) people<br />

In addition there were a number of commonly raised concerns around the themes of :<br />

• Travel<br />

• Parking<br />

• Visiting<br />

• Capacity at City Hospital<br />

• Not being able to give birth in <strong>Sandwell</strong><br />

These concerns will need to be considered in developing the plans for making changes to the<br />

service.<br />
