5.8.2 Notifying the Infection Control Service (ICS) of patients with known or<br />

suspected communicable infections.<br />

5.8.3 Ensuring appropriate isolation in line with infection control guidelines.<br />

5.8.4 Providing full information on communicable infections to patients and their<br />

relatives (as appropriate). This must be documented in their health care<br />

notes and supported with written (patient) information where applicable.<br />

5.8.5 Monitoring and enforcing infection control guidelines amongst staff, patients<br />

and visitors including the appropriate use of PPE.<br />

5.8.6 Responsible for ensuring both the environment and equipment are clean and<br />

fit for purpose.<br />

5.8.7 Providing information on diagnosis and infection control requirements if<br />

the patient is transferred to another institution<br />

5.9 Medical Staff are responsible for:<br />

5.9.1 Undertaking a risk assessment for all patients admitted with known or<br />

suspected communicable infections.<br />

5.9.2 Notifying the Infection Control Service (ICS) of patients with known or<br />

suspected communicable infections. .<br />

5.9.3 Ensuring all patients with known or suspected communicable infections are<br />

isolated appropriately.<br />

5.9.4 Commencing appropriate and prompt treatment.<br />

5.9.5 Providing information on diagnosis and infection control requirements if<br />

the patient is transferred to another institution.<br />

5.9.6 Ensuring patients are given adequate information regarding their clinical<br />

condition and the reasons behind isolation requirements.<br />

5.10 The Infection Control Operational Committee<br />

The Infection Control Operational Committee (ICOC) represents the main forum for<br />

discussion between the ICS and other Senior <strong>Trust</strong> employees to ensure that there<br />

is support from the <strong>Trust</strong> for infection control policies, procedures and guidelines,<br />

for the control and prevention of infection.<br />

a) To advise and support the Infection Control Service<br />

b) To advise relevant personnel to include the Medical Director and Chief<br />

Operating Officer or designated Deputy on any infection control related<br />

issues<br />

c) To review the annual infection control programme and seek approval by<br />

the <strong>Trust</strong> <strong>Board</strong>.<br />

d) To approve the annual report produced by the Infection Control Service<br />

e) To assist and advise the <strong>Trust</strong> in the management of outbreaks, discuss and<br />

endorse any outbreak management strategy and monitor its effectiveness<br />

f) To advise and approve infection control policies and guidelines and evaluate<br />

their implementation.<br />

g) To monitor the Infection Control action plan and escalate any issues of<br />

concern to the Infection Control Executive Committee<br />

h) To offer advice on the most appropriate use of resources available to<br />

facilitate the implementation of the infection control programme and endorse<br />

any contingency requirements.<br />
