The cost of an asset comprises its purchase
price and any directly attributable costs of
bringing the asset to its working condition
and location for its intended use. Expenditure
incurred after the property, plant and equipment
have been put into operation, such as repairs
and maintenance, is normally charged to the
income statement in the period in which it is
incurred. In situations where it can be clearly
demonstrated that the expenditure has resulted
in an increase in the future economic benefits
expected to be obtained from the use of the
property, plant and equipment, the expenditure
is capitalised as an additional cost of that asset.
All direct and indirect costs relating to
the construction of property, plant and
equipment, including borrowing costs during
the construction period are capitalised as
construction in progress. Construction in
progress is stated at cost less any recognised
impairment loss. Construction in progress
is classified to the appropriate category of
property, plant and equipment when completed
and ready for its intended use. Depreciation
of these assets, on the same basis as other
property assets, commences when the assets
are ready for their intended use.
