MOISTURE TREATED SUBGRADE<br />

PART 1 - GENERAL<br />

1.01 DESCRIPTION<br />

A. All material, labor, equipment, tools and superintendence necessary for the moisture<br />

treatment <strong>of</strong> the subgrade in all areas to be paved.<br />

PART 2 - PRODUCTS<br />

2.01 MATERIALS<br />

A. Not used.<br />

PART 3 - EXECUTION<br />

3.01 PREPARATION<br />

A. Weathered shale material encountered within 8 feet below finish subgrade shall be<br />

subexcavated to a depth <strong>of</strong> at least the depth <strong>of</strong> required moisture treatment and replaced with<br />

on-site light brown or dark brown clays or other approved material.<br />

B. Moisture treatment shall extend at least 4 feet beyond the edge <strong>of</strong> pavement and to the depth<br />

as shown on the plans. The subgrade shall be moisture treated to a minimum <strong>of</strong> 3 percentage<br />

points above optimum moisture content at a minimum <strong>of</strong> 95 percent standard Proctor (ASTM<br />

D 698).<br />

C. Frequency <strong>of</strong> compaction testing shall not exceed one test for every three hundred linear feet<br />

300’ spacing or less ,alternating from left quarter point to center line to right quarter point for<br />

every layer <strong>of</strong> moisture treatment.<br />

D. Moisture treated lifts shall not exceed eighteen inches (18”) <strong>of</strong> thickness.<br />

E. Any embankment that requires moisture conditioning treatment will be treated for the entire<br />

height <strong>of</strong> the embankment.<br />

F. Moisture treatment by injection is not an acceptable method to treat roadway subgrades.<br />
