desk study. Although the main focus was the power<br />

generation potential in the vicinity of C-centres, the<br />

study considered the resource potential in the vicinity<br />

of the nearby population centres as well. It identified<br />

6 MW of mini hydro potential, more than half of<br />

which was concentrated in North Solomons province.<br />

Other promising locations were in Madang, Morobe,<br />

Eastern Highlands and Southern Highlands provinces.<br />

In some locations, the economic viability was judged<br />

to be low or uncertain due to low demand and/or<br />

cheaper power through grid extension or other<br />

A future energy scenario for Papua New Guinea shows<br />

tremendous potential for further commercial energy<br />

production from renewable indigenous resources,<br />

including hydropower development. In the capacity<br />

range of 1-10 MW, 6 MW of potential capacity could<br />
