4.5.1.2 Fauna
General Characteristics
Due to the unique nature of the proposed locations in Hulhule and Hulhumale, no observable
terrestrial fauna was recorded during the field survey. The proposed location in Hulhumale in
particular is newly reclaimed land, and currently remains barren. The proposed location in
Hulhule, is near the end of the airport runway, and next to a heavily used road, which minimizes
the number of bird species that can use the area drastically.
However, some common faunal species were recorded in the proposed location Male’, where the
general environment is considerably more vegetated and larger in size. As the occurrence fauna
was found to be minimal during the brief survey period, faunal survey was carried out based on
similar conditions found elsewhere in the Maldives, and local accounts on species found at the
location. An inventory of the fauna found at proposed location in Male’ is presented in Table
4.12.
Birds
No birds were observed at the project location during the field visit, however based on local
accounts and similar conditions found in the Maldives, it is assumed that species such as Kaalhu
(Corvus Linnaeus), Pigeon (Columba livia) and Koveli (Eudynamys scolopaceus) are found in
the proposed location.
Due to the short amount of time that is usually spent during field visits, the number and type of
species recorded may not be completely accurate to study avian fauna of the island. In order to
complete a detailed study of birds found at this location, it will require several months of on-site
observation.
