(2) Two Star (**) – For competitors with some<br />

experience in Three-Day Events on horses just<br />

beginning International competition.<br />

(3) Three Star (***) – For competitors and horses<br />

with some International experience.<br />

(4) Four Star (****) – For experienced and successful<br />

combinations of International competitors and<br />

horses.<br />

2. Two-Day Event – The Two-Day Event comprises three<br />

distinct tests, usually taking place on two days, during<br />

which a competitor rides the same horse throughout<br />

namely:<br />

a. Dressage Test<br />

b. Jumping Test<br />

c. Cross-Country Test comprising four phases:<br />

(1) Phases A and C – Roads and Tracks<br />

(2) Phase B – Steeplechase<br />

(3) Phase D – Cross Country Obstacles<br />

d. The tests must be scheduled in the order listed above.<br />

e. Levels of Two-Day Events<br />

(1) Intermediate<br />

(2) Preliminary<br />

3. <strong>Horse</strong> Trials –The <strong>Horse</strong> Trial comprises three distinct<br />

tests, usually taking place on one or two days, during<br />

which a competitor rides the same horse throughout,<br />

namely:<br />

a. Dressage<br />

b. Cross Country<br />

c. Show Jumping<br />

d. The Dressage Test must be first. The Cross-Country<br />

and Jumping Tests may follow in either order.<br />

e. Levels of <strong>Horse</strong> Trials<br />

(1) Beginner Novice<br />

(2) Novice<br />

(3) Training<br />

(4) Preliminary<br />

(5) Intermediate<br />

(6) Advanced<br />

4. Tests – Tests consist of one or more dressage, cross<br />

country, or jumping competitions. They are designed to<br />

introduce the discipline, and to prepare competitors and<br />

horses for <strong>Horse</strong> Trials. Tests may be offered as separate<br />

competitions or may be organized in conjunction with a<br />

<strong>Horse</strong> Trial or an Event. These competitions may include:<br />

a. Cross Country Tests – consist of distinct competitions<br />

involving various cross-country skills. The tests may<br />

include pace, taking your own line, following unknown<br />

course, top score competitions with obstacles of<br />

different values, clear round cross-country, etc. The<br />

conditions under which the Cross Country Tests will be<br />

conducted will be printed in the prize list.<br />

b. Combined Tests – consists of two distinct tests during<br />

which a competitor rides the same horse throughout.<br />

The tests may include two of the following: dressage,<br />

cross-country, jumping; or may include one discipline<br />

(such as cross-country) repeated twice under different<br />

conditions. Combined Tests will be conducted under<br />

guidelines published by the USEA.<br />

c. Starter Event Rider Tests – Open to riders of any<br />

age who have never competed in a horse trial, on<br />

any horse. The test shall involve a short dressage<br />

test (30 percent), jumping 6 or 7 fences in the arena<br />

(30 percent), and galloping in the open over 3 or 4<br />
