After winning a Pulitzer for Driving Miss Daisy,<br />

Alfred Uhry emerges as theater's new king<br />

Alfred Fox Uhry, an American playwright, screenwriter, and member of the<br />

Fellowship of Southern Writers, is one of very few writers to receive an Academy Award,<br />

Tony Award (2) and the Pulitzer Prize for dramatic writing, Driving Miss Daisy.<br />

In an interview with Uhry, he said that this is his first play and he was overwhe<strong>lm</strong>ed<br />

DRAFT<br />

by the praises he received from his colleagues. The play's success hasn't gone to Uhry's<br />

head. "I don't plan to wave my Pulitzer around," he says. He feels the prize comes with a<br />

responsibility.<br />

"With Miss Daisy I wrote a play that says warmth and dignity can be yours until the<br />

very end," he says. "I think I owe the Pulitzer committee at least one more.<br />

When I’m writing a play I’m in the play. I have to see it to write it: the characters<br />

move around, walk, talk, and I’m the audience. I’m watching the play in my head when I<br />

write.<br />
