A Discourse can be reported in two ways:<br />

1. Direct Speech when actual words of the speaker are quoted<br />

2. Indirect Speech when speaker’s dialogue is reported without quoting his<br />

exact words<br />

The next task will test your skill in reciting the lines of the characters of the<br />

play “Death of a Salesman”. Read and follow the instructions for you to enjoy the<br />

activity.<br />

Task 11. Diversifying the Lines<br />

You will be divided into small groups, then from each group, the teacher<br />

will draw at least two names of the members to recite one of the lines taken from<br />

task 9- a. The teacher will direct the lucky members the particular emotion which<br />

they should convey. As you recite the lines, observe appropriate pitch, stress,<br />

juncture, and intonation.<br />

Example: Biff, I know you will be successful because you are well-liked. (angry)<br />

The student who is tasked to recite this line should do it in an angry<br />

mood.<br />

1. Why don’t your sons give you a hand, Willy? (ca<strong>lm</strong>)<br />

2. I can’t throw myself on my sons. (depressed)<br />

3. Did you tell him not to go to summer school? (angry)<br />
