5. Results<br />
5.1 Greet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> part<strong>in</strong>g behaviour<br />
Greet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> part<strong>in</strong>g formulas are fixed elementary components <strong>in</strong> every<br />
communication. They are normally predeterm<strong>in</strong>ed accord<strong>in</strong>g to the degree of<br />
<strong>in</strong>timacy of the <strong>in</strong>teractants, the purpose of the situation or communication <strong>and</strong><br />
the cultural or sometimes even local habits (cf. Feller 2007).<br />
There seem to exist two different k<strong>in</strong>ds of st<strong>and</strong>ard greet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> German chat<br />
rooms: if the chatters engage <strong>in</strong> a smaller group that is characterized by a higher<br />
<strong>in</strong>timacy among the members, greet<strong>in</strong>gs are more personalized <strong>and</strong> chatters<br />
usually do not <strong>in</strong>troduce themselves. Runkehl et al. (1998:113) see these multitud<strong>in</strong>ous<br />
greet<strong>in</strong>gs as a sign for the phatic function of the chat that will be dealt<br />
with later <strong>in</strong> this article.<br />

Kar<strong>in</strong> greets everyone. Sopran greets back <strong>and</strong> starts a conversation pick<strong>in</strong>g up<br />
the clue <strong>in</strong> Kar<strong>in</strong>’s name (Ungarnkar<strong>in</strong> “Hungarykar<strong>in</strong>”) <strong>and</strong> strikes up a conversation<br />
about the country. Kar<strong>in</strong> responds to the offered communication which<br />
then cont<strong>in</strong>ues for some time.<br />
The next example (2) features seven chatters that greet <strong>and</strong> are greeted <strong>in</strong><br />
