Conclusions: Cultural Dialogue between France and Spain The three Spanish channels stress the different issues of the conflict which made the French youth clash with their Government during the early months of 2006. Furthermore, the news of these channels differ in their position in the axis euphoria/dysphoria: the almost festive atmosphere evoked in La 2, the distant solemnity of TV3 and the more dramatic tone of Cuatro. The analysis of these three news items show that the conflict is trivialized or enlarged, rather than seriously explored. Indeed, the news items also have these elements in common: − The silence about the debate and the confrontation of opinions among the same demonstrators, without making the difference between them and the rioters. − The lack of an authentic contextualization, when the viewer does not know that these events are part of a series of reform attempts by the French government, all of them failed due to citizen protests – and here the evocation of May ‘68 is, to say the least, hardly appropriate. − Nothing is said about the job market problems nowadays, which is ultimately common to the two European countries, France and Spain, and to some other members of the European Union, too; on the other hand, on two channels, the young people’s movement about the botellón is mentioned. This occurs to us as a rather anecdotic question. If we did the opposite, if we analyzed the French news-reporting of some Spanish events, the conclusions would probably be very similar. Our observations as simple television viewers allow us to hypothesize, for example, that little mention is made in the French news to the drama of the African immigrants crossing the Gibraltar strait in rickety boats. In short, there is still too much unawareness, too little interest in each other in these two countries, which are, indeed, friends and neighbours. We think that this is an issue that should be taken into consideration when thinking of the construction of a social Europe. It would be a good thing for the member countries to go into a more close dialogue and to get to know each other better. And, according to us, this objective would call for a bridge-building effort from the different bodies of the civil society and, especially, from media. References Adam, Jean-Michel. 1999.
