(4) Tiger-177 begrüßt alle
Stitch22 begrüßt alle […]
“Tiger-177 greets everyone
Stitch22 greets everyone […]”
And they are realized just by pressing a button. Typically such greetings are found
in chat rooms with younger chatters. The chatters often have to insist on receiving
an answer like in the example below where the chatter sweety_86 tries to engage
in the chat:
(5) Sweety_86 begrüßt alle […]
Sweety_86: wer will mit mir chatten? […]
Sweety_86 setzt sich in eine einsame Ecke und wartet auf einen süßen Boy […]
Sweety_86: wer will mit mir chatten???
“Sweety_86 greets everyone […]
Sweety_86: who wants to chat with me? […]
Sweety_86 sits down in a lonely corner and waits for a cute boy […]
Sweety_86: who wants to chat with me???”
The greeting phrase does not evoke any reply, so sweety86 asks whether there is
anyone willing to engage in a chat with her. As no one reacts, she tries to draw the
attention to her by posting the phrase that she is sitting in a corner waiting. As still
no one reacts, she asks one more time, underlining her request with iterated
question marks this time.
It seems striking that greeting sequences are far more out-stretched in chat
rooms with older chatters. The younger ones often content themselves with short
standardized phrases to which they do not necessarily expect an answer. The same
is true for the parting phrases. While young chatters often just ‘check-out’ of the
chat with a quick ‘Bye everybody’, ‘CU’ or a simple ‘…and gone’, while older
chatters show a more polite parting and greeting behaviour. This can be found in
German as well as in Russian chat rooms – the older and the more acquainted the
users are, the longer welcoming and parting sequences become (cf. Fix 2001:49).
Two examples in German (6) and Russian (7) are given below 8 :
(6) Hermelin1 winkt zum Abschied […]
Golferin-53 [@hermelin1]: dann wünsch ich dir noch einen schönen abend
und knuddel dich mal
Malli-Smile: einen schönen abend
*Elfe*: schönen abend noch hermelin
Radi: grüß dich lieb donaunixe
Golferin-53: gehts scho hermelin?
Hermelin: ja war schon zu lange im chat
8 The indented sentences constitute the parting of hermelin, while the non-intended sentences
compose the welcome of donaunixe. This optical distinction was made in order to make it easier to
follow the conversation that otherwise might seem chaotic.
