muchos incidentes (“many incidents in the Latin Quarter”).
The images then show us the places. The journalist continues with the information
in the same wavelength: buenas y agitadas noches (“good bustling night”)
and says that, as usual, there is a lack of consistency in the number of
demonstrators, according to the different sources baile de cifras (“confusion of
figures”). The journalist provides some opinions from the Prime Minister’s circle,
according to which they could manage to convince the youth and change the
public opinion; we are thus given the point of view of the government.
The journalist once again insists on the upheavals and reports about the
confrontations at Sorbonne Square. IG finishes the news early because of a
football match that follows. Yet, he still mentions the spread of the protests
outside Paris, especially in the cities of Rennes and Toulouse.
On the next day, IG presents the news by starting with Chirac’s call for
dialogue. Regarding the demonstration, he mentions the confrontations, the
damages and the fact that there are some wounded.
In the main part of news on this second day, IG compares these uproars with
those from Spain, the macrobotellón, like in TV3, yet, on Cuatro, it is the
conductor himself who establishes the comparison, while the Catalan channel
resorts to a third party, a British newspaper.
Finally, the conductor quickly refers to the meetings which have taken place
in France (university students and politicians), before mentioning the demonstrations,
scheduled for the coming Saturday.
In this private channel, the stress is on the conflictive aspects of the events
presented, the violence of the confrontations, yet, without the presence of
witnesses and reference to the actors. On the other hand, the demonstrations in
two cities other than Paris are referred to. Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that
this is the only piece of news that mentions the possibility of the government
convincing the French society of the issues of such a project.
We might ask if the most obvious characteristics of the news in Cuatro are a
direct consequence of the personal style of the director and conductor, IG. The
solemn key, the comparison with the macrobotellón, and taking into account the
point of view of the Government seem to correspond to the personality of this
journalist, so serious and reflective.
8. The modalities of the reported event in the Spanish channels
In general, the Spanish channels describe the CPE with paraphrases and
reformulations, while on the French channel, it is understood that everyone knows
about the contents. However, in the Spanish news, there is neither a precise
description nor a contextualization of this new reform attempt of the work market.
