5.3.4 Display of actions
A special technique to illustrate nonverbal behaviour is limited to German chat
rooms. The chatter uses the stem of a verb without any obligatory personal
pronoun and marks it with asterisks (cf. Runkehl et al. 1998:106). Thereby, one
easily expresses a state of joy, anger or action at that time. These ‘inflectives’ are
not used in Russian chat rooms due to the fact that the Russian verb does not
‘allow’ any such forms. The same is true for English, where the stem of the verb
and the infinitive without ‘to’ are one and the same. For this reason, the
translation does not really display the true construction as it appears in the
German examples 14 .
