Conventions and norms depend on shared knowledge and acceptance, and
make behavior more predictable: they generalize from past experience and make
projections concerning similar situations in the future. They have a socially
regulatory function.
All procedures involved in translation are permitted only by the translator’s
adherence to principles. These principles dictate decisions concerned with the
textual selection procedure, that is to say, decisions regarding which texts or parts
of texts shall be chosen for translation in order for the texts to be acceptable for
entry into the literary system.
Translation scholars note that norms are not directly observable making it
hard for a researcher to identify them. For the case of colloquial language/speech
it can be said that the main norm and principle is the aim of the translator to
mirror reality, to give that sound of a language that is different from the natural
language.
8. Concluding remarks and tips for further research
The present paper presented some strategies applied for the translation of
colloquial language/speech in general and slang and dialect in particular.
However, in order to generalize strategies applied for the translation of colloquial
language/speech and norms that govern these strategies we had better investigate
all genres of CL/S and not just slang and dialect. That is, we need to study the
translators’ behavior patterns and norms when they undertake the task to translate
every verbal manifestation or irregular speech, including: argot, jargon, vulgarism,
the vernacular, curse words, swearing language, etc.
Similarly, translation strategies and norms governing the translators’ choices
with regards to further lexis areas should be investigated. Thus, areas such as
figurative language/speech (FL/S) in translation, poetry in translation, etc. can
attract researchers’ interests in the field of Translation Studies.
