Lines in a 4-plane
Lines in a 4-plane 4 have the same form when expressed in coordinate-free notation as they
do in any multiplane.
To obtain the PlŸcker coordinates of a line in a 4-plane, express the line as the exterior product
of two points and multiply it out. The resulting coefficients of the basis elements are the PlŸcker
coordinates of the line.
Additionally, from the results above, we can expect that a line in a 4-plane may be expressed
with the least number of scalar parameters as the exterior product of two points, each point lying
in one of the coordinate 3-planes. For example, the expression for the line as the product of the
points in the coordinate 3-planes e1 e2 e3 and e2 e3 e4 is
L x1e1 x2e2 x3e3 y2e2 y3e3 y4e4
Lines in an m-plane
The formulae below summarize some of the expressions for defining a line, valid in a
multiplane of any dimension.
Coordinate-free expressions may take any of a number of forms. For example:
L x y
L xy x
L yy x
L y x x y
A line can be expressed in terms of the 2m coordinates of any two points on it.
L x1e1 x2e2 xm em y1e1 y2e2 ym em
When multiplied out, the expression for the line takes a form explicitly displaying the PlŸcker
coordinates of the line.
