You have just read the following advertisement in Publi-Namur and you decide to react<br />

quickly :<br />

AGAINST RACISM – INJUSTICE – INTOLERANCE<br />

FOR A SINCERE EXCHANGE OF CULTURAL EXPERIENCES<br />

Namur, August 17-24 , 2002 : International Youth Summer Camp<br />

Organized by : the City of Namur<br />

Public : all young people feeling concerned by their future<br />

If you are interested send a letter to Mr Noulard, NEW, rue des Brasseries, 5000 Namur<br />

Explain to him why you wish to participate in at least 3 of the forums listed in the programme below<br />

(Write about 100 words for each forum). To persuade him you must express your opinion and<br />

concern about these topics with conviction.<br />

Participants will be selected on the basis of a sincere argumentation and motivation.<br />

Application deadline : June 30th, 2002<br />

Programme of the forums<br />

-August 18th : Terrorism , a fair weapon against unfair people or the opposite?<br />

( Think back of what happened not so long ago)<br />

-August 20th : Should we forget our specific cultures and go global ? Should /Could Shakespeare,<br />

Molière, or A. Nothomb or... be turned into a « Loft » or a soap opera?<br />

(Think of how our past can also be adapted into modern forms (ex : art, cinema, theatre,<br />

literature...)<br />

-August 21st : Apartheid in South Africa is not dead. Must the Afrikaners finally leave the country ?<br />

With special guest star John Briley, Biko’s friend, who will participate in the debates and answer<br />

questions.<br />

( Mind the differences between past and present)<br />

-August 22nd : Debating on the rise of extreme-right movements. Man hasn’t learned from his<br />

past ! This debate will lead to the writing of a chart against intolerance.<br />

-August 23rd : Why should special Children Sessions organized by the United Nations be repeated<br />

more frequently ? What are you ready to do to improve the situation ?<br />

The American news magazine Newsweek has recently opened a website to make it possible for<br />

its readers to react to the topics dealt with in this year’s issues.<br />

The following articles have more particularly drawn your attention.<br />

Violence, the new disease of the 21st century. The author describes different sorts of<br />

violence and asks for tougher action.<br />

War on terrorism (article about what happened on 11th September criticising the<br />

intervention of the USA in Afghanistan)<br />

Aren’t secondary schools on the decline in the Western World ? This article compares<br />

different school systems, questions the efficiency of co-educational schools and<br />

criticises the fact that secondary schools have become much too easy and that there is<br />

no real selection.<br />

You want to react and send your opinion on the website.<br />

Write down a text o f approximately 30 lines giving your opinion about the content of the 3<br />

articles mentioned above. You must devote more or less 10 lines to each topic. Make sure you<br />

react to the different aspects of the articles (see topic 3).<br />
