Il a notamment réalisé AcceleratedUnderdevelopment, An Injury to One, Who Killed Cock Robin ? etla performance Proving Ground. Il nous laisse seulsavec une parole « embarquée » – et avec de surprenantes images d’archivesen couleur tournées par les G.I. eux-mêmes, décidément seuls raconteurs.(C. G.)A father sitting centre table, flanked by his two grown-up sons, and beers: this minimalconstruction is as geometrically sober as Leonardo de Vinci’s Last Supper. Relaxed, theman unrestrainedly recounts his experience as an air force officer in Vietnam. War? Hisvocation as a pilot was the fruit of chance: you had to go through the air force to get a careerin aviation. Fighter helicopter? He had no desire to fly one, weapons meant little to him.Questioning the margin of manoeuvre of what the filmmaker calls “a good man” in timesof unjust war, the film above all focuses on the distinctive features of his discourse. A lengthysubtitle sets the autobiographical material at a distance in the manner of the chaptertitles of an 18th-century novel: The Story of How Chief Warrant Officer Wilkerson WasAwarded the Distinguished Flying Cross As Conveyed To His Sons. Emphasis is placedon narration as an artefact (how is the exploit that nearly cost his father his life related?)and on the context of speech (partial, almost silent listeners). Distinguished FlyingCross, unostentatiously Brechtian, dispenses with commentary. It leaves us alone with an“embedded” story and surprising archive colour images filmed by the GIs themselves, whoare in fact the only storytellers.

(C. G.)A finger searches in a box of colour-headed pins. Traces a pattern in the powder snow. Leafsthrough a stack of letters. Close-ups of the filmmaker’s hands create the link between a mindthat is searching and a body that is showing to the friend, the philosopher Jacques Sojcher, objects like the bottles of rainwater he collects at his window and labels—their dating, like a miniature stele, having more importance than their content. These objects are bothfuneral relics and proof that the world is alive and throbbing, just as the philosopher seesnothing contradictory in combining his passion for Nietzsche with his liking for tap-dancing.But Exercices de disparition also enables Claudio Pazienza, who seems constantly discomfortedby his own off-screen voice, to make himself vanish. In one astonishing shot,he is seen stretched out behind his mother’s sewing-machine table and, for a few seconds,he transforms into a future man-cut-in-pieces. Mid-way between a conjuring trick andFrancis Ponge’s The Voice of Things, the disappearing exercise takes on planetary dimensions:the film-maker disappears with Jacques to opposite sides of the world, as the editingtakes them from Asia to Africa. Or makes Jacques climb into a coffin shaped like a giantfish. Could it be that disappearance in fact means becoming pure listening? Capturing inthe dark (“nothing to describe, nothing to say”) the world’s sounds that come in answer toevery mourning’s “explosion of silence”.
