(C. G.)Who, at some point, hasn’t had the following nightmare : “The doctor rang me onemorning… I feel bad. Can you be more precise ? I’m afraid.” Matthieu Chatellier beginsfilming his day-to-day life when, at the age of 33, he learns he has diabetes. The resultis a film that is simultaneously part a love-letter, a medical documentary and a homemovie. It is also a will, but a paradoxical one. Because if sugar is eating away his insides “assea water erodes the carcass of a ship”, death is far from certain. So the story swingsbetween tragedy and comedy, between a daily life contaminated by new rituals and therhythmic breathing of shots that seemingly make no sense, like the teenagers at a funfair near the stand selling candyfloss (now on the list of forbidden foods). In this filmic scrapbook humming with a creativity that is seemingly enhanced byanxiety, dreams are narrated using the cut-out figures lit by a torch. The changingnarration—sometimes entrusted to a toy parrot that talks—makes Doux amer swaybetween the opposite poles of its title. The filmmaker’s sudden attention to his own bodymodifies the way that he looks at his wife and daughters. From the white hair to thewobbly teeth, the bodies so dear now seem so vulnerable. What, if not love, can keepour pile of corruptible organs in one piece?

(C. G.)“This rather clean city, with its fountains and sculptures, could have been compared toGeneva…”. Like a final cursive, coloured trace of a city that will only remain in its inhabitants’imagination, in songs, paintings and films, this voyage narrated by the actor-poetDominique Batravaille captures the enormity of the event without falling into the clichésof news reporting.Haiti, year zero : still battered by the very recent earthquake, the “dream-like Port-au-Prince” lacks even a modicum of comfort, and its former magnificence will soon be irretrievablyrazed to the ground. On a pile of rubble, the land surveyor sings a Lazarus-like lamentto “this city of damnation”, to “the treacherous soul”. Aïda Maigre-Touchet has found theperfect guide, someone who, by the poetic force of the words he chooses and the aspects of thelandscape he points out, touches only lightly on the event while communicating its enormity.“I haven’t eaten any coconut/How is it that my house trembled… ?” Recited amidst the rubble, his poem, which is both allegorical and concrete (he talks about “trembling with joy in frontof the tents”), well deserves a soup.
