Il coréalise en 2005-2006La lettre scellée du soldat Doblin avec Hubert Ferry.À Beverungen en Westphalie, comme dans bien des communes allemandes,la « fête des tireurs » mobilise périodiquement un quart de la population masculine.Et pour cause : depuis plus de dix siècles, l’occasion est donnée à toutun chacun, pourvu qu’il soit une fine mouche, de devenir pour un an le roi,de choisir sa reine et de parader dans les rues.Dans ce film qui, à la manière de La Rosière de Pessac de Jean Eustache,enregistre au présent une tradition a priori anachronique, la frontalité descadrages et la précision de l’image haute-définition insinuent une pointed’inquiétude : et si le jeu dépassait la pochade costumée ? Si cette célébrationnoyée sous les hymnes à la douceur du Heimat avait des soubassementspolitiques moins joviaux ? Dans la deuxième partie, la pertinence de son titreapparaît, confirmant cette inquiétude : en 2008, la même bourgade accueillecette fois une manifestation d’importance supérieure, la Fête de la Confédérationdes Confréries historiques allemandes de tireurs. Surprise, les protagonisteschangent : les moustachus fiers d’exhiber les costumes de tireursde leurs crus respectifs disparaissent à l’arrière-plan. Dominent désormaisl’aristocratie allemande et le haut-clergé, venu en masse. Le souvenir de lasoumission du pouvoir temporel au pouvoir spirituel ressurgit, comme siles Lumières n’avaient jamais existé. And with good reason : for more than tencenturies, everyone is given the chance, provided they are a crack shot, to become king for ayear, to choose their queen and parade through the streets.In this film which, like Jean Eustache’s La Rosière de Pessac, records a tradition that is apriori anachronistic, the face-on framing and the precision of high definition introducea worrying element : what if the game went beyond the costumed parade ? What if thiscelebration immersed in anthems lauding the sweetness of the Homeland had less jovialpolitical underpinnings ? In the second part, the relevance of the title becomes clear, confirmingthis anxiety : in 2008, the same town hosted a more important event, the Festival of theConfederation of Historical German Marksmen’s Brotherhoods. Surprise, the protagonistschange : the soldiers with their heavy moustaches proudly parading in the military costumesof their respective traditions fade into the background. Now it is the German aristocracyand high-ranking clergy, present in large numbers, who dominate the scene. The memory ofthe submission of temporal power to spiritual power reappears, as if the Enlightenment hadnever existed. Westphalia, however, is the home region of the hero of Voltaire’s Candide…
